Fines were issued early this morning after Overstrand Municipality Law Enforcement officers conducted foot patrols in the Kammabaai and Mossel River areas of Hermanus as part of ongoing crime prevention operations.
Officers addressed incidents of illegal camping in public spaces and removed makeshift tents, sleeping gear and cardboard shelters found in bushy areas.
These clean-up operations form part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety, reduce fire risks and address health concerns associated with makeshift camps that lack adequate sanitation and cooking facilities.
Residents are reminded to remain vigilant at all times. Women in particular are urged to be aware of their surroundings and not leave valuables, especially cell phones and handbags, in plain sight. Criminals often target distracted walkers and/or hikers.
The Overstrand Municipality further advises residents and visitors not to hike or walk alone. Groups of three or more are strongly recommended.
If you spot any vagrants (bosslapers) or trolley pushers setting up makeshift structures or notice areas where they have established small communities along the bushy areas or public open spaces, or vacant erven, please report it.
We kindly request that when incidents of vagrancy are reported, you remain calm and clearly state the exact location and refrain from rude behaviour towards the call operators, as they are only receiving the complaints and will issue work orders to the relevant officials.
Please also note that if vagrants are on private property, the property owner must address the issue. However, it still needs to be reported to SAPS or the municipality.
